Robert Einbeck, the president and cofounder of the Time for Peace Film & Music Awards, said:
“Alexandra” contains a powerful realism which sheds light on three themes, one immediate and the others timeless: the nature and fallout of civil wars with an ethic, religious and cultural dimension; the essential humanity that unites us without effacing the differences; the themes of old age, youth, men and women, and proximity to death. Alexandra impresses with the excellent ability to demonstrate the utter horror and senseless brutality of war without a single scene of a war. The brutality of war is however there, highlighted by its impact on the lives of the individuals on both sides. In fact, the tests of humanity behind the battle lines become far more compelling. Just very impressive and professionally executed - both the director and the actors are superb and the final message of human bonding between the two women creates a hope for the future.
Galina Vishnevskaya conveys a universal message of humanity, through an amazing way of playing a very complicated role and in very difficult surrounding. A rare performance as an old woman, not in an anglo-american but an Eurasian (specifically Russian) social setting; conveying quintessential strength and dignity even in a masculine militaristic setting of an army camp; the ability to relate as a woman, to women on the other side of the barricade; a complex relationship with her grandson; and dignity in the face of death. This legendary singer makes an impressive effort in demonstrating the depths of a Russian soul and portrayed a strong character despite her fragile frame and age. She reached out to both soldiers and residents of the village with compassion.
