“Alexandra” by Alexander Sokurov was selected in the competitive programme of the Cannes film festival

Also Russia will be presented by the film of Andrey Zvyagintsev “The Banishment”. Festival will take place from 16th to 27th in the palace of Congresses at the Croisette embankment in Cannes.
The art-director of the festival Thierry Fremaux announced that he is glad that “russian cinematograph, which has such great traditions, is coming back in the competitive programme of our 60th anniversary festival”.
“An appearance of russian films at the screens in the competitive section is an evidence of the authentic revival of the russian cinematography, represented by two films: of venerable director Alexander Sokurov and Andrey Zvyagintsev a young, but already took action director”, - Fremaux said.

Feature films Jury is led by the famous British director Stephen Frears, an author of such popular films like “Queen”, “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Hero”. Among other membership of the 60th anniversary festival jury in Cannes are: French actor and director Michel Piccoli, Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung, Australian actress Toni Colette, Italian actor and director Marco Bellocchio, Canadian actress and director Sarah Polley, Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako and a Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, laureate of the literature Nobel Prize.
Thierry Fremaux has mentioned that this year a selection committee made a huge work – this is the first time in the history of the festival when an amount of the submitted films exceeded 1500 quantity. Amongst of the selected films, competitive section will show a number of films of the world famous directors - Quentin Tarantino, Emir Kusturica, Wong Kar Wai, Gus Van Sent and Coen brothers. Other works which make a claim for the Palme d’Or, mainly belong to the young directors.

France will be represented by the works of the Catherine Breillat, Christophe Honoré and Jullian Schnabel. Last one is the director of the musical comedy “Love Songs”. These three directors participate in Cannes Film Festival for the first time.
The opening film this year will be a Film of Wong Kar Wai “My blueberry nights”. In the film besides famous british actor Jude Law there was an american jazz singer Norah Jones.
Hors concours at the Cannes film festival will be featured by a new documentary film “Sisqo” by American director Michael Moore. Three years ago he got the Grand-Prix of the festival for his famous work “Farengheit 9/11”.

In the festival days there will be screening of the new documentary film about Marlon Brando.

Film “Alexandra” – it is a drama about life of the military and peaceful people in the up-to-date Chechnya. Scenario was written by the director himself. Starred by famous opera singer Galina Vyshnevskaya, who celebrated her 80th anniversary last year.
Producer and composer of the film – Andrey Sigle who already worked with Alexander Sokurov in a tandem in such films like “Taurus”, “Father and son”, “The Sun”.
